Research Areas

1. Modern Design, Modeling, and Artificial Intelligence

CMSI aims at bringing a paradigm shift where material, modeling, and robotic printing are seamlessly integrated through an overarching umbrella of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Data Science (DS). It promotes basic research and creation of new platforms by integration of theory, modeling, and design, with testing and experimentation, strengthening connections among theorists, computational scientists, data scientists, and experimentalists. The new computational paradigms will facilitate cyber digital-physical platforms to integrate domain-based knowledge in a novel, rigorous, and seamless overarching framework, giving rise to digital twins for safe and efficient manufacturing.

2. Materials for Novel Manufacturing

CMSI seeks to foster the design and development of materials to accelerate their path to deployment by harnessing the power of data and computational tools in concert with experiment and theory. It also develops new material design paradigms that maximize the use of local materials to minimize the environmental impact, while addressing the challenges of reducing material resources for the growing.

3. Robotics and Automation

Advances in high-performance computing, data science, machine learning, multimodal sensing, and control are coming together to create enormous opportunities for intelligent and autonomous or semi-autonomous systems that promise to improve the safety and efficiency of autonomous manufacturing. CMSI focuses on investigating the fundamental limits and performance guarantees of robotic printing for civil infrastructure. It also focuses on the designing of control algorithms that can synchronize material property evolution timescales with the 3D printing timescales, taking advantage of unique opportunities afforded by robotic printing to manufacturing civil infrastructure.
